| In impressionism and expressionism, the form is simplified, deformed and transformed to the benefit of the expression of idea. This can be very beautiful.
However, these styles very often reveal the incapacity to faithfully reproduce the human form, the most evolved form in this world. It is true however, that an academic form without expression is quite lifeless.
In the same way, the “skilfully slipshod” indeed slap-dash style, reveals a mental incapacity to be elegant. It is very useful if one wish to hide oneself into a group. However, the result is the trivialization and social rejection of the individual.
Other modern styles of the 20th century do not transcend, for the most part, the dimension of intellect, the unique source of the concept. They can flatter or clash with the human emotions associated with this world, but that is all. They cannot touch the soul, nor give rise to existential questioning of the human being and least of all appease them. Perhaps the unsettling, sometimes frightening agitation of the modern world is the consequence of the interest to the animality of the human being rather than his nobility. After all, the art of the 20th century to modern times had strongly influenced by an urinal classed as a “work of art”: surrealism, pop art, etc.
Is not everyone’s resigned acceptance a form of individual responsibility?
